The songs below we introduced in class. They are reminiscent of both the tonality and style of some native american music.

We spent a full class this week working with our green belt songs, It's Raining. Students even created their own arrangements complete with a percussion accompaniment! Great job 3rd graders! Green Belt Quiz: Room 107: Monday Room 105: Tuesday Exciting News!! Students can now begin to come to recorder recess on Mondays! They need to sign up outside of the library in the morning and come to practice. This is a good time to make-up quizzes or even get an extra challenge! Extra Songs! For Fun!Students are preparing It's Raining for this week in their recorder karate books. They should review and practice the songs we have already learned as well as make up their own songs using the notes they know. (BAGCDE)
Bonus Belt! Students learned a fun passing game this week in an unusual meter! If students would like to earn an extra belt... they can play this song (learned by ear) for the class next week. Together we discovered that they will use the notes BAGE, that the song is in the key of G, and that it starts on Mi of the solfege scale. Have fun going above and beyond! Note: Students who forget their recorders can always see Ms. Schmittle in the morning and no points will be deducted AND they will receive a clean loaner recorder. We have had too many students this week with no recorder in hand! Here is another song we will be using this week with xylophones, glockenspiels, and other percussion instruments!
Students now have their recorder karate books to work on at home. Students can now use the link in my "online resources" section for practice help and accompaniment. It is daily practice that will make students better at recorder. Take a little bit of time each and every day! Students should be working on white and yellow belts this week! If you are still struggling with naming the notes on the treble clef... check out this game! or this game!
Yellow belt playing quiz -- next week! Homework this week is to play your compositions on the recorder. I am looking for students who can play composition 1 and composition 2. The others are an extra challenge! Clap through your rhythms and make sure you a playing the correct notes! (Composition sheets and directions were given out in class.)
How often should students practice their recorder? 7 minutes per day! Set aside a time each day where students can practice their recorder. It is really helpful if it is the same time each day. What should they practice? Currently, students are working on using warm slow air into the recorder and using a silent "doo" or a "too" to tongue the notes. By the end of this week, both classes have played the notes B, A, G, and D. (See fingerings below) Challenge: What songs can you figure out using only these notes?? How should they practice? This week, students should create 4 beat rhythm patterns and perform these patterns on one note at a time. (B, G, A, D) Challenge: Use two notes in the 4 beat rhythm pattern... or even a different note each beat! Click here for an interactive fingering chart! Just click on a note and it shows you how to play it! Students are coming home with their new Yamaha recorders this week! Homework is to label both the recorder and its case with your name. Room 105: Wednesday / Room 107: Friday In class students learned about their recorder embouchure or how we should shape our mouths. We have been forming a "doo" and blowing soft, warm air into the recorder. Rules: 1. Left hand goes on top 2. Make sure the holes are sealed! Fingers flat. 3. Sit tall 4. Let warm air out 5. Play with a "doo" So far... Students have learned 1 note, a B! Thumb and first finger cover the holes.
